Around 6 P.M. on Monday, October 8, 2024, an Air Evac Lifeteam medical helicopter had crashed while responding to an emergency call in Kentucky near Owenton. It was the Air Evac 133 medical helicopter that had crashed. It was a Bell 206L-3 helicopter. Air Evac 133 was based in Grant County Kentucky.
Three crew members on board had died. Kentucky State Police said the victims, Gale Alleman, Bethany Aicken and James Welsh were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened near the local restaurant of Amigos. Witnesses at the Amigos restaurant was eating on the patio when they observed the helicopter hit a tower. It then crashed to the ground and caught fire.
The Owen Electric Cooperative said the crash caused a power outage in the area. They were able to restore the power in about an hour.
The National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) is sending investigators Tuesday. The NTSB asks anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information should contact them at 571-223-3930.
The Air Evac Lifeteam company commented on the incident. They said “We were informed of the accident by local law enforcement shortly after it occurred. The crew is based out of Grant County, Kentucky and were on their way to a scene to pick up a patient when the accident happened. This was a terribly tragic accident, and our deepest sympathies go out to the employees’ families and friends.” The company said they were sending critical incident stress management teams to assist their team members through this difficult incident.
