Two Missiles Fired by North Korea Days After U.S., South Korea, and Japan Military Drills
The Joint Chiefs of Staff provided a statement which advises that North Korea had fired two missiles on Monday two days after the United States of America, Japan, and South Korea were conducting joint military drills.
The second missile was fired about 10 minutes after the first one was fired. They both were ballistic missiles. It seems that the second missile might have had a malfunction as it had an abnormal path. The first missile had traveled 370 miles while the second missile went only 75 miles. The second missile was too short to reach the eastern waters were North Korea typically fires their missiles towards. Both were shot from the southeastern area of North Korea and initially traveled in a northeastern direction.
The joint drills were called “Freedom Edge” and is preparing the militaries to respond to any threats from North Korea and the increasing aggressiveness of China in the Asian region. They are both naval and air drills. It gains for improvement of military skills in surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and improving joint ballistic-missile defense. Japan, South Korea, and the United States used U.S. aircraft carrier, fighter jets, destroyers, and helicopters in the three-day drill.
North Korea did state they would take “offensive and overwhelming responses” to the joint drills being conducted. Just a day before the missile test, North Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement denouncing the “Freedom Edge Drills” North Korea considers the partnership of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea as another NATO. North Korea thinks the drills destroy their security of the Korean Peninsula. They think the U.S. has an intention to cause pressure to Russia and lay siege to China. North Korea said they intend to “firmly defend the sovereignty, security and interests of the state and peace in the region through offensive and overwhelming countermeasures.”
This is the second missile test of North Korea within a week. Just five days ago North Korea fired these a missile they called a “multiwarhead missile” which they say is an advanced weapon they intend to use to defeat the United States and South Korea’s missile defenses. North Korea says it was a success while South Korea says it was not successful.
Recently North Korea and Russia had created a mutual defense agreement which they agreed to assist each other if either country is attacked.
The area is going to have to be closed surveyed for any additional threats.
